Mentor TrainingBrunel University Primary Partnership PGCert Primary May 2014
Agenda • Professional Learning Record (PLR) • Moderation • Supporting students to achieve the Standards at the ‘high’ level • Teachers’ Standards 2, 5 and 6 • Use of other adults in the classroom
Professional Learning Record • Stored electronically on Pebblepad (hard copy in green section of Handbook) • Covers the whole school-based training period • Summary of progress towards meeting the Teachers’ Standards • Involves student teacher, mentor, link tutor and HEI tutor • Opportunity for student teacher to be aware of their progress towards meeting the Teachers’ Standards • Please contact anu.sharma@brunel.ac.uk if you have any difficulties with PP
Mentor’s role in assessment • Monitoring and assessing trainee’s progress each week through regular file checks, observation, debriefing and target setting • Checking trainee’s evidence against the Standards • Monitoring pebblepad and ‘approving’ the Professional Learning Record (PLR) following your weekly meetings
School based assessment points • Foundation and Development Phases Please see outcomes from previous assessment points on PP • Consolidation phase – CSE Profile Evidence • Interim: end of week 7 (before half term) • End: during the final two weeks of CSE
Evidence of meeting the Standards • Student teacher completes self assessment using UCET’s descriptors (p.97-104 in handbook). They suggest how well they are meeting the standards (at the minimum, good or high level) and provide a rationale for this assessment • Mentor completes next section with assessment and rationale • Mentor and student teacher meet to discuss progress and grades are agreed • Targets for the next phase of school experience are identified • Strengths and distinctiveness are identified • As part of Brunel’s quality assurance mechanism link tutors will be involved in moderating assessments • Process repeated at the end of the Consolidation Phase
If you see this yellow box, your student has not started working on the document Your student should complete this section first Your version will look slightly different, but this is where you will type your comments Remember to click ‘Save’ at the bottom of the form!!
Unsatisfactory progress • If you are concerned that your student teacher is not making satisfactory progress towards meeting any of the Teachers’ Standards you must issue a ‘Cause for Concern’ by alerting the link tutor without delay. This must be done if students are meeting any of the standards below the ‘minimum’ level. (This can include section 2 of the Teachers’ Standards relating to personal and professional conduct). • The link tutor will discuss whether an action plan should be put in place to support the student • All students assessed at the minimum level or below for any standard will attend individual tutorials during half term to address these areas.
Moderation activity • Look at the level descriptors for one of the Teachers’ Standards and discuss with a colleague how well your student teacher is meeting it. • What is your rationale? • Where would any supporting evidence be found? • NB TS3 relates to general subject knowledge but the documentation provides an opportunity to break this down to the core subjects
Meeting the Standards at the highest level (TS 2, 5 and 6) • Identify where your student is currently (using UCET’s descriptors) • Read the descriptor for meeting the standard at the ‘high’ level and identify training opportunities that you will provide to ensure your student reaches this by the end of the placement
Working with additional adults • NQT survey – area for development • Please share your expertise on working with TAs and other adults in the classroom • Procedures to ensure effective communication with additional adults • Using additional adults to support assessment • Managing difficult relationships
