Mathematical SciencesBrunel University Simon Shaw School of Information Systems, Computing and Mathematics BI agent briefing – 11 April 2013
What we have to offer • Good range of courses with strong research base. • Strong student support in a student-centred department and university. • Six different Maths undergraduate courses. • Information Systems, Computing and Mathematics via an Integrated Foundation Year. • Postgraduate courses (MSc and PhD).
Foundation Year • A pre-degree year for those qualified to start on a degree course. • Part of an integrated course… • Leads into degree courses in Mathematics, Business Computing, Computer Science and Computer Systems Engineering. • Progression to BSc is automatic for passing students. • The content is the maths and computing needed to start on those degree courses.
Mathematics Degrees • Mathematics (BSc and MMath) • Financial Mathematics (BSc and MMath) • Mathematics with Computer Science • Mathematics & Statistics with Management • Six in total: 4 Bachelor’s and 2 Master’s
Integrated Master’s Degrees • Integrated Master’s degree over 4 years available for Mathematics and Financial Mathematics. • Years 1, 2 the same as the BSc. • Years 3,4 go to Master’s level. • Master’s level in an extra academic year… • … rather than a calendar year.
Mathematics Degrees • Broad-based courses with a common core, giving some flexibility. • Key concepts and techniques (algebra, analysis / calculus, discrete maths, statistics, etc) and a range of applications. • Core Maths is initially taught in small groups (15-20) to ease transition to university. • Weekly marked work gives regular feedback (to both staff and students).
Final Year • Wide range of choices: • Statistics, risk, finance, differential equations, complex analysis, computational maths, … • Final Year Project • One third of the final year (22% of final degree mark). • Wide choice of topics - often based on current research. • Individual weekly supervision. • 70 page dissertation and presentation.
Brunel Sport André Wright, a final year maths student won the “performance of the championship” award at the 2013 British University Indoor Championships for winning the 200m.
Research excellence • In the most recent (2008) Research Assessment Exercise: • 87% of our research is of international significance. • 16% of our research is world-leading. • Top 3 in London area. • Research underpins our course planning, and particularly, the Final Year Project.
A few recent job titles • Biostatistician • Statistical Programmer • Junior Financial Analyst • Maintenance Revenue Administrator • Treasury Analyst • Actuary • Accounts Assistant • Business Analyst • Operational Research • Data Analyst • Risk Management • Portfolio/Fund Management Over a 3 year period Maths has improved its employability year on year despite the challenging economic climate
