  1. Why People Migrateand How They AdaptGymnasium of LabytnangiRussiaSponsoring teacherSvetlana Kurkova

  2. The Main Purpose of the Project We wanted to find out what migration is and how people adopt to their new home in Russia and in the country of our partners in Oman.

  3. We also wanted to find out • If people migrated in the past; • If people migrate in other countries; • The reasons people migrate; • What helps people to adapt to their new home; • How people adapt to the Polar North environment.

  4. We brainstormed the questions to be discussed; We discussed these questions with our relatives; We discussed the same questions with our partners from Oman; We surfed the Net to find out if anybody was interested in such problems; We discussed the information we got in class We wrote everything we had found out in short compositions. What we have done

  5. What is “to Migrate” Part of Speech: verb Definition: move, travel to another place Synonyms: drift, emigrate, immigrate, journey, leave, roam, rove, shift, transmigrate, trek, voyage, wander Antonyms: stray

  6. People has always migrated and go on migrating. Examples: The pilgrims migrated to the American continent. 2 . During the World War II people in Russia migrated to Siberia from western territories which were occupied by the fascists. Did people migrate in the past?

  7. Do people migrate only in some countries? • People migrate everywhere but the reasons are different. • Different countries attract different people, so as different places attract different people, e.g. some people migrate to warm regions because their children suffer from lung diseases. Other people move to democratic countries as they have their own ideas on religion and want to worship the way they like.

  8. Who are The First to Migrate? • Usually fathers or young man are the first to migrate (both in Oman and in Russia). • Women and children usually come when the father finds a place to live and get his first money .

  9. The reasons of migration • poor living conditions; • wars and conflicts; • environmental problems, • a lack of economic perspectives; • they want a better future for their children; • they seek freedoms (e.g.religious, etc). • good job opportunities. • to pursue higher education (MahaMaha Shabiby , Oman)

  10. Why do people migrate to the cold North? • -they want better salaries even though the work here is more difficult. • They dream of building their own houses in other regions and want to make money here. • They want to enjoy the beauty of the Northern nature. • Their work is connected with oil, gas, deer breeding.

  11. How People Adapt to the North Environment • Yana Lugovaya: We have very cold winters here. When my family came here we had no warm clothes. Now when we adapted we have fur coats, fur caps, scarves, mittens and fur boots. Those who work outdoors have even warmer clothes. Sometimes you can see only their eyes through special holes in the masks!

  12. Transport. • You can get to the capital of Russia from here only by plane or by train. Our town is surrounded by swamps. It takes 2 days to get to the nearest road by ferry on the Ob river. • The railway station is in my town of Labytnangi. The capital of Yamalia, the town of Salehkard, is15 km from here. The airport is between our towns. You can cross the Ob between our towns by ferry in summer. In winter you can travel to the airport on the ice of the frozen river Ob. When the ice is not thick enough, we go over the river by helicopter.

  13. The Houses. Mash Starostina: • In the North people build houses on the poles. That’s why the “ground” floor is usually cold. In summer when the permafrost melts big pools cover the land. The houses are expensive as everything we build the houses from is brought from the “land”. Also there are no gardens around the houses and very few flowers blossom around the houses as summer is short here. The houses are not high.

  14. Food Artyom Zakharov: • If you live in the North, doctors recommend to eat the food which grows here. We adore fish which is caught in the Ob, mushrooms, berries of the tundra, and especially meet of the deer. It is considered to be very good as deer eat only moss. People pick up berries and mushrooms in the autumn as they are very tasty.

  15. Do people always find what they seek for in a new place? • Not always. Sometimes they go back to their motherlands, others try to change their life in the place where they live now. • Sometimes they can cope with their problems in their new place as people living in this place are truthful, honest, generous and helpful (Jawaher Asiaybi, Oman )
