  2. The Messiah Begins MinistryMatthew 3 & 4 & Selected Messiah had to be of blood line from Adam  Abraham  King David Messiah could not be a descendant of King Jehoiakim Messiah had to be a man, but avoid the curse of sin  the virgin birth Messiah had to be born in Bethlehem

  3. The Messiah Begins MinistryMatthew 3 & 4 & Selected Messiah had to be alive at the end of the 69 prophetic weeks of Daniel 9 Messiah had to be sinless Messiah had to be the son of God Only Jesus fulfills all these prophecies

  4. The Messiah’s HeraldMatt.hew 3; Mark 1; Luke 1 & 3; John 1 Isaiah 40:3-5 predicts the coming of a herald before the Messiah Luke 1:5-21 Isaiah 40:3-5 & Malachi 4:6 were fulfilled by John the Baptist John & Jesus were related by their mothers. John is 6 months older

  8. The Messiah’s BaptismMatthew 3; Mark 1; Luke 3 Levitical law required washing of clean things that touched unclean things. Jesus’ righteousness was internally generated & not defiled by unclean things or sinners (Matthew 9:20f) Jesus fulfilled the Levitical ceremonial law by His baptism

  9. The Messiah’s BaptismMatthew 3; Mark 1; Luke 3 Jesus baptism was symbolic of His death and resurrection (Luke 12:50 & Mark 10:38) Jesus' baptism marked the beginning of His public ministry The Holy Spirit descending as a dove confirmed the vision God gave John

Christian Baptism Christian Baptism is unique though it is done as a result of repentance and in obedience to God (Matthew 28:19) Christian baptism is personal identification with Jesus’ death, burial & resurrection (Romans 6:3-11) Christian Baptism is symbolic of our dying to our old sinful self and being raised in newness of life (Romans 6:12f)

The Temptation of the Messiah Matthew 4; Mark 1;12,13; Luke 4 The Holy Spirit lead Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil It was not by chance, fate, bad luck or arranged by the devil The devil is a real being. diavbolo" / diabolos = "slanderer." The temptations Jesus will face are real

The Temptation of the Messiah Matthew 4; Mark 1;12,13; Luke 4 Jesus is in a famished when tempted Enticement: Satisfy your hunger Slander: God is not providing for you Temptation: Provide for your own needs instead of relying on God Answer: Deut. 8:3 - Man shall not live on bread alone, but on the word of God.

  14. The Temptation of the Messiah Matthew 4; Mark 1;12,13; Luke 4 Enticement: Satisfy your pride Slander: God has not honored you as you deserve Temptation: Gain honor by your own means. Don’t waiting for God’s timing Answer: Deut. 6:16 - “You shall not put the Lord your God to the test."

The Temptation of the Messiah Matthew 4; Mark 1;12,13; Luke 4 Enticement: Satisfy the desire of your Eyes Slander: God has failed to give you the kingdoms of the world, but I will Temptation: Gain the what you want by worshiping Satan instead of God Answer: Deut. 6:13 - 'You shall worship the Lord your God, & serve Him only.'"

  16. Overcoming Temptation Selected Scriptures Jesus did not defeat Satan by quoting Scriptures Jesus defeated the devil by knowing the Scriptures and being obedient to them. Memorize Scripture in order to obey God (Psalm 119:9-11)

  19. Overcoming TemptationSelected Scriptures Slander deceives us from truth to respond to lies, ignorance & desires Eve was deceived by Satan’s slanders against God resulting in disobedience Adam rejected God’s command for unstated reasons and sinned

  20. Overcoming TemptationSelected Scriptures Do you know the truth well enough to hold on firmly even when life seems to be coming apart? Cancer? Loneliness? Death of a child? Reputation destroyed by lies? Economic hardship?

  21. Overcoming TemptationSelected Scriptures Satan wants you to ask “why?” & doubt God’s character & abilities We overcome temptation as Jesus did – hold tight to truth and obey it.

  22. Overcoming TemptationTruths about God Death is an enemy conquered by Jesus – 1 Corinthians 15 God is good – Luke 18:19 God is merciful – Lamentations 3:23 God is gracious – James 1:7; Eph. 2:8 God is kind – Psalm 136

  23. Overcoming TemptationTruths about God God is caring – Romans 8:27; Matthew 10:30; 2 Corinthians 1:3; Isaiah 63:9 Is God is fair? No, He is merciful & gracious Yes, He is righteous & just God is sovereign – Romans 8:28 God is loving – Romans 5:5,8

  24. Overcoming TemptationSelected Scriptures God always provides a way to either endure or escape temptation James 1:3,4 – the testing of our faith helps us to mature When we do sin, we are to repent, confess and rejoice in God’s forgiveness & promises – 1 John 1:9
