Description • The purpose of description (as opposed to definition) is to explain a scene in a way that makes the audience see, hear, taste, smell, and feel – both physically and emotionally. • Vivid details are the key. Specificity is what creates imagery. • Imagine the subject when prewriting. Use your imagination as an inspiration for your writing.
Narration • The purpose of narration is to tell the audience what happened in a way that makes them feel as if they were there. • In general, narratives of human conflict (internal or external) are the most interesting. • Use dialogue as appropriate. (Remember to use quotation marks.)
Description + narration = storytelling Strike a balance between the two.
Notes • Unity (thesis), support (evidence), coherence (organization) and style apply to stories just as they apply to arguments. • Thesis – the topic • Evidence – the scene (description) and what happened (narration) • Organization – chronological • Style – vivid details • Keep in mind that we also use stories in arguments: • Stories can serve as evidence (ie, examples). • Employing stories is a rhetorical strategy – especially stories that bring emotion (pathos). Stories can make an argument more interesting, and all things being equal, audiences likes interesting arguments more than boring ones.
Essay #1 • Write a storytelling (descriptive/narrative) essay. • It should be long enough. • It is due Tuesday 12 November. I will not accept late essays. • You pick the topic! (It’s more interesting for Sam that way – but feel free to ask him for guidance.)
