  1. ritual versus Ritual Greek 101: An introduction to the fraternity and sorority experience. Josh Schutts, M.Ed.

  2. Disclaimers • I love talking about this. • Ritual and values are the most important things to fraternities and sororities today. • What makes F&S different from other clubs? • Synonymous terms (fraternity/sorority) • In the interest of fairness, I will use my fraternity often in examples

  3. What is a ritual? • Examples of rituals you experience • Purpose of those rituals • Do you even think about some of them? What is Ritual? • Notice the “big R”

  4. So what’s the difference? • ritual = • daily habits • some noticed others not. • Susceptible to change when outdated • Ritual = where we learn the values of our organization. • It is constant and never changing

  5. Ok..so now what • We must begin to live those “secret rituals” as if they were not. • What does he mean by that? • How do I do that? • There are many secrets to life and success in society locked away • What Rituals have you seen so far?

  6. To live the Ritual… • We must first seek to understand • Break it down, use the resources around you to help • Pledge Ed • Big Bro/Sis • President • Advisors/Alums • Beauty in writing

  7. Preamble ofPKA • “For the establishment of friendship on a firmer and more lasting basis; for the promotion of brotherly love and kind feeling; for the mutual benefit and advancement of the interests of those with whom we sympathize and deem worthy of our regard; We have resolved to form a Fraternity, believing that, thus we can most successfully accomplish our objects.

  8. 4 pieces • The Preamble is the reason my founders chose to start our fraternity. • It is the foundation for all other Rituals • Public, not secretive and a great place to begin

  9. Broken down • “For the establishment of friendship on a firmer and more lasting basis; For the promotion of brotherly love and kind feeling; For the mutual benefit and advancement of the interests of those with whom we sympathize and deem worthy of our regard; We have resolved to form a Fraternity, believing that, thus we can most successfully accomplish our objects.

  10. Working Backwards • The founders had “objects”—three of them • Aspire to accomplish by founding Pike • Believed that founding a Fraternity is the way to gain accomplishment • They have a purpose. A reason to exist.

  11. 3 Objects • What are they? • Establish friendship on firmer & more lasting basis • Promote brotherly love and kind feeling • Mutually benefit and advance those with whom they sympathize and deem worthy of their regard • What does this mean?

  12. Establish friendship • Firmer and more lasting basis • Friendship for a lifetime • Beyond the College years • A cultivation of something beyond the academic experience • A firm friendship: one that could stand the stresses of time and life

  13. Promote • Brotherly love • A family • Brother bond although not by blood • Legacy, promoted by recruiting and initiating family members • Kind feeling • Respect and appreciation for others • Peace • Inclusion not exclusion • Tolerance and patience • No room for hazing

  14. Mutual benefit • Those we sympathize with • New members • Family/parents • Less fortunate • Community & philanthropy • Enrichment of my life and another’s • Advancement of the interests of those with whom we sympathize and deem worthy of our regard • What do people need from me? • How can I help someone? • How can I serve? • Humility, humbleness and the giving of self to others

  15. Where does this get us? • Understanding and education of expectations • Road map for personal success • Taking the next step • Teaching others • Aligning your life into congruency • Leading our community with integrity

  16. Values, Integrity, Congruency and Expectations • Values learned in our Rituals • Integrity and congruency • DWYSYWD • BWYSYWB • Expectations • Teach and educate • Raise your brothers and sisters up • Raise our community up

  17. Learn it, live it, teach it, expect it.

  18. My challenge to you • Take in the rituals you are about to see • Problems in Greek life today are not because we’ve taken bad people • Problems exist because we’ve set our standards too low and have been comfortable with under-achievement • You all here and in your NM classes are fine individuals – the best Centre has to offer

  19. We forget …our roadmap • We forget …the answer key • We forget …our values • My challenge • Don’t forget. • Remember • Learn • Embrace • Teach • Expect

  20. The Greatest Man Theory was wrong • Our groups forged from the best raw materials into a finished product of luster and excellence • As you return to your programs, your studies, your daily rituals… • WILL YOU PASSIVELY ACCEPT YOUR FRATERNITY/SORORITY EXPERIENCE? -or- WILL YOU ENGAGE, CHALLENGE AND LEARN WHAT IS TRULY REQUIRED AND TRULY EXPECTED OF THIS GREAT THING WE CALL “Fraternity”
