What caused this event? • The British were in serious need of money. • Tea was very popular and they believed that they could get more money from the sale of it.
“Tea Tax” • Parliament made a decision about how tea should be taxed in 1773. • Belief that colonists would rather pay a tax for the tea other than have none. ...They were incorrect
Result of the increased tea costs • Three ship loads of tea were sent to Boston • Colonists were unhappy, rebelled. – disguised themselves as American Indians. • These colonists made their way onto the ships-dumping the tea into the harbour.
British Response • Tea was extremely expensive. – actions of colonists cost British a great deal of money. • British shut down the Boston port. • Ships could no longer come and go.
Effects on People/Society • Caused conflict- began the American Revolution. • American Revolution- lead to the independence of the United States (Nationalism-the fight they endured for their country) American Revolution
