The legacy The National English Honor Society provides its members with the opportunity to pursue a range of extracurricular activities to complement their rigorous academic curriculum. Benefits of affiliation include national recognition, scholarship eligibility, and national networking with others who share enthusiasm for the language arts.

specific requirement: • Must have been in attendance at the school the equivalent of one semester prior to being considered. • If special circumstances merit (such as coming from a different school), the Faculty Advisory Council may waive the semester regulation. • Must have completed the equivalent of two semesters of English courses prior to induction as a member • Must have achieved a minimum overall grade point average of a 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) prior to induction as a member.
Member responsibilities New members that received letters at the end of last year needs to pay dues of $10. If you do not, you will be placed on the fines and fee list and will not receive exemptions. *Can only miss one meeting per semester and NEHS hours will not be stacked with NHS.
Member responsibilities • Maintain an 80 or above in Advanced English classes/ 90 or above in regular English classes • Obtain 5 NEHS hours* per semester • Meetings* will be at 2:30 PM on the first Friday of each month. • All Makeup meetings will be on Monday mornings. • We will be looking out for members with officer quality! ;-) *Can only miss one meeting per semester and NEHS hours will not be stacked with NHS.
CORDS The requirements to get cords: • Meet membership requirements + 10 excess NEHS hours/year of membership until senior year. Yes, that means each consecutive years!
Member Removal: • Any member who fails to meet the Eagle Chapter’s requirements or violates any rules of Glenda Dawson High School and/or Pearland ISD shall be dismissed from NEHS membership. • Officer Removal: • Any officer who fails to meet this society’s requirements, does not fulfill his/her duties as an officer, or violates any rules of Glenda Dawson High School shall be dismissed from NEHS membership or dismissed from his/her officer position and will remain a NEHS member.
Removal procedures of a member shall be as follows: • A probation letter shall be sent to the member stating the specific duties not fulfilled. • Once a letter is received, the member has 5 school days to rectify the situation with the chapter advisor, president, and vice president. Should one of the members include the president or vice president, then the secretary will stand in as one of those representing officers. • If the situation is still not rectified, then a final meeting will be held with the chapter advisor, associate principal, and/or principal of Glenda Dawson High School. • A final letter will be given regarding the membership decision.
*1st probation = Tentative Dismissal *2nd Probation = Automatic Dismissal from Society * Depending on the circumstances of the dismissal, a member may or may not be reinstated into the society again. * Members who had been issued a probation will not be considered for officer position.
HOUR OPPORTUNITIES • Attend a literary event (theater performance, movie based of a book, school play, etc.). • Turn in your ticket stub/program from the event + essay response reviewing the event (500 words minimum) + hour form in the basket at each meeting. Each event will give you 2.5 NEHS hours. • SENIORS: Attendance at any of these event (on the list) can be doubled for NEHS hours. http://www.pearlandisd.org/webpages/vmunoz/extracredit.cfm
HOUR OPPORTUNITIES • Join the NEHS Homecoming Banner Committee. All committee members will communicate and discuss meeting details. Keep in mind that the banner will be due on September 26, 2013. http://nehs.yolasite.com/documents.php The sign up portal will be closed on Wednesday, September 11, 2013.
HOUR OPPORTUNITIES • Volunteer for shifts/prep at the NEHS flock party booth. • Prep: bring in needed items and help setting up. • Volunteer for shifts during lunch to sell NEHS T-shirts. • Volunteer to help English teachers/librarians after school.
HOUR OPPORTUNITIES • Participate in NEHS Project: sending letters to troops for holidays. • Participate in the NEHS book drive (later in the year). • 5 children's books/3 young adult or appropriate adult books donated, will be equivalent to 1 NEHS hour. You will only receive 2 hours maximum. • Help with Dawson Spelling Bee sponsored by NEHS (second semester). • Participate in the "English and Literature Club" discussions.
How are hours recorded? This year, we are doing hour forms.
