War Hawks • War Hawks (Republicans Henry Clay and John Calhoun) elected from the South and West join Congress. War Hawks persuaded congress to support a declaration of war against Britain
Dolley Madison Attack on Washington DC: In 1814, the British occupied DC and set fire to many public buildings including the White House. Dolley Madison saved the Gilbert Stuart portrait of George Washington from the White House. The saving of the portrait served as a symbol of American independence and perseverance.

Reasons: increase in Factories/ economic Changes: The British blockade of the American coast created a shortage of cotton cloth in the United States.American cotton had been shipped to Britain where it was turned into cloth, then sent back to America. The shortage led to the creation of a cotton-manufacturing industry in the U.S. Numerous manufacturing establishments were founded, particularly in the Northern region. The U.S gained industrial independence from Europe.
Significance This war establishes the U.S. as a country with an identity, we fought against our first invasion proving we were a powerful force. No territory was gained and there was no clear winner
