  4. Reproductive cloning • Remove the nucleus from a body cell • Implant the nucleus into an egg • If this egg begins to divide normally it can be implanted into a surrogate mother • The offspring will be a clone of the nucleus donor

  5. How to clone an animal To clone an organism you need: • A perfect DNA sample • A suitable surrogate mother In extinct species both of these will be hard to find

Example: Woolly mammoth The woolly mammoth has often been seen as a candidate for cloning as many specimen have been found preserved in perma-frost • However: • DNA is unlikely to have survived the freezing process • Cells may rupture as ice forms inside them • There are no mammoths to act as surrogate so you would have to use an elephant and this could cause cross species complications Wiki user: Ben2 CC3.0

  7. Activity Task 1 • In your groups turn over the animal profile cards on at a time and read out the information • Decide as a group which of the species you would most like to clone, and why, and place them in order accordingly • You have 10 minutes to complete this activity

Activity Task 2 • Now that you have ranked the species look at the stakeholder cards • Each of the stakeholders has their own perspective on the idea of cloning • Take each stakeholder in turn and discuss how you think they would feel about your top three choices • You have 10 minutes to complete this activity
