Organizing your research first • Helps you see what information you actually have. • Helps you see what kind of additional information you need to complete your paper.
Organizing your research first • Outlines can help you determine how the information is connected. • Outlines can thus help you to create the best order for that information in your paper. Organize it first!!!
Methods of organization • Chronological—organizes your paper by time; best for summarizing steps and explaining events in the order in which they occurred.
Methods of organization • Illustration (deductive)—first you state a general idea (thesis), and follow with specific reasons, examples, facts
Methods of organization • Compare-contrast—show how one topic/idea is similar or different from the other
Methods of organization • Cause-effect—helps to establish connections between ideas
Methods of organization • Problem-solution—state the problem and then address possible solutions
Methods of organization • Classification—can be used to explain a term or concept; explain the classification, and then explain how your topic/idea is similar or different from that classification
All 3 project types mustcomplete a background research paper. • 3-5 pages • 12 pt. font • double spaced
Your background research should give you ALL the information you need to…a. complete your creative projectb. understand the impact and importance of your community servicec. choose a solid thesis for further research
Background Research • Have someone else proof read it for you!! • Trade papers with a friend for proofing. You will need this skill in life and college. • Make sure your information is organized and shows research in all areas you need for your project.
Cover Page • Your name • Your senior project title • Your type of project (creative, community service or research) • Your advisory teacher’s name/room number
Resources • At least 5 sources. • All sources you cite should be used in your paper. • Citations in APA format. • No more than 1 source from a website or interview.

Resources • Cite any information that you summarized or paraphrased or directly quoted. • Also, cite all statistics that appear in your paper.
Learning Stretch • The point of the senior project is to provide a final big learning stretch for students. • Your background research and final project should show this. • All 3 project types should have a point, a purpose, a why, a thesis. a thesis.

October 8thadvisory • Submit 2 copies of your background research. • One copy will be kept on file. • The other one will be returned to you with notes and your readers names (to contact them if you don’t understand the comments provided.)
Advisory Grades on HAC • Hasyour Parent Notification Formbeen documented? • If your Topic Approval Form grade is 10/20, you need to bring one of the senior project advisors the written approval you needed to get for you event or the updated forms you need.
Project Checklists • There are example checklists on the senior project website. They list specifics for each project type so you are sure you don’t miss a step. • Click on Guidelines/Checklists in the top right corner of the Senior Project Main Page
Experience Log • There is an example Experience Log on the Senior Project Website. • It gives ideas about the kinds of things you would document in your log for each project type. • There is a blank form on the website also. • Click on guidelines/Checklists
