  1. Lesson 13-1Pages 669-672 Polynomials

  2. What you will learn! • How to identify and classify polynomials. • How to find the degree of a polynomial.

  3. Vocabulary

  4. What you really need to know! Polynomials are classified according to the number of terms they have. A monomialhas one term, a binomialhas two terms, and a trinomialhas three terms.

  5. What you really need to know! A polynomial also has a degree. The degree of a polynomial is the same as that of the term with the greatest degree. The degree of a term is the sum of the exponents of its variables.

  6. What you really need to know! The exponent of a variable in a monomial must be a whole number, and the variable cannot be in the denominator or under a radical sign.

  7. Example 1a: Determine whether the expression is a polynomial. If it is, classify it as a monomial, binomial, or trinomial. Not a polynomial!

  8. Example 1b: Determine whether the expression is a polynomial. If it is, classify it as a monomial, binomial, or trinomial. Yes ; Binomial

  9. Example 2a: Find the degree of each monomial. 4th degree

  10. Example 2b: Find the degree of each monomial. 3+7+1 = 11th degree

  11. Example 3a: Find the degree of each polynomial. 2 + 5 = 7th degree

  12. Example 3b: Find the degree of each polynomial. 1 + 6 = 7th degree

  13. Example 4: The formula for the surface area (A) of a cube is A = 6s2, where s is the side length. Find the degree of the polynomial. 2nd degree
