Lesson 13-2Pages 674-677 Adding Polynomials
What you will learn! • How to add polynomials.
What you really need to know! Add polynomials by combining like terms, which are monomials that contain the same variables to the same power.
Example 1: Find the sum: (9w – 4) + (w +5)
Example 1b: Find the sum: (6x2 – 3x + 1) + (x2 + x – 1)
Example 1c: Find the sum: 5a3 + (2a – 4a) + 7 5a3 + -2a + 7 5a3 – 2a + 7
Example 1d: Find the sum: (4x2 – 3y2) + (x2 + 4xy + y2)
Example 2: The length of a rectangle is 3x2 + 2x – 5 units and the width is 8x – 1 units. Find the perimeter.
Example 3: The length of a rectangle is 3x2 + 2x – 5 units and the width is 8x – 1 units. Find the length of the rectangle if x = -3.
3x2 + 2x – 5 ; x = -3 3(-3)2 + 2(-3) – 5 3(9) + 2(-3) – 5 27 + -6 – 5 21 – 5 16 units
