Introduction • Ways to draw your reader’s attention to your subject: • Open with a series of questions about your topic • Define an important subject-related term. • Present a startling or unusual fact or figure. • Quote a well-known person or literary work. • Provide an interesting story or anecdote about the subject.
Introduction Example Europe is one of the most interesting places in the world. Inside Europe there are various countries that are both famous and beautiful. These countries include France, England, Switzerland and Denmark. Perhaps the most famous and most beautiful of these countries is Germany.

Body of Essay • All paragraphs should have a topic sentence and supporting sentences. • All paragraphs must clearly and logically support the thesis. • All paragraphs should flow smoothly from one to the next(use transitions: in addition, as a result).

Body Example My first reason for wanting to visit Germany is the desire to see numerous German places that are of historical importance. One of these would be the former site of the Berlin Wall, where now a gateway to peace stands. Another would be the famous towns and villages that were important during World War II. Finally the old cathedrals, museums, and government buildings represent a major part of the German heritage which all must see.
Conclusion • The closing or summary paragraph should tie all the important points in the essay together and draw a final conclusion for the reader.
Conclusion • The ending should: • Leave the reader with a clear understanding of the essay topic. • Include author reflection beyond repeating the thesis. • Summarize the body paragraphs. • Provide brief examples if necessary to emphasize reflection. • End with a clincher sentence. A clincher sentence leaves the reader with something to remember or think about (optional).
Conclusion Example There are numerous motives for wanting to travel to Germany. I want to visit Germany’s important historical places, learn its language, and taste its food. I eagerly wait for the day when I can actually visit this beautiful country.
