Mission Guided by the Constitution, we in the National Prosecuting Authority ensure justice for the victims of crime by prosecuting without fear, favour or prejudice; by working with our partners and the public to solve and prevent crime.

National Prosecuting Services • Core function of the NPA, i.e instituting and conducting criminal prosecution • Coordinates and assists the offices of the DPPs and Lower Court Prosecutors • Monitors and manages the performance of prosecutors in court
Directorate of Special Operations “Scorpions” • Investigate criminal activities committed in an organised fashion • Investigate any offences determined by the President by proclamation in the Gazette • Focus on crimes of national impact that require the integration of intelligence, investigation and prosecution, supported by modern technology
Asset Forfeiture Unit • Established to make crime unprofitable by seizing assets that are proceeds of crime or used as instruments to commit crime • It deals with cases involving all crime with special emphasis on organised crime • It uses the asset forfeiture powers contained in Chapter 5 and 6 of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act • Asset forfeiture is a new area in SA law

Sexual Offences & Community Affairs • Specialist Unit dealing with sexual offences against women and children • Manages multi-disciplinary centres that care for survivors of rape, called Thuthuzela Care Centres
Sexual Offences & Community Affairs • SOCA’s four core areas of focus: • Sexual Offences • Child Justice • Domestic Violence • Maintenance
Witness Protection Unit • The WPU mandate is from the Witness Protection Act 112 of 1998 • The functions of the Unit include: • creating and maintaining successful support services for vulnerable and intimidated witnesses • ensuring successful relocation and reintegration of witnesses back into society (After-care) • All functions & duties classified ‘Secret’
Specialised Commercial Crime Unit • Employs specialist prosecutors to coordinate the investigation and lead the prosecution of commercial crime • The Unit investigates and prosecutes complex commercial crime matters emanating from the SAPS Commercial Branches
Priority Crimes Litigation Unit • Established by Presidential Proclamation in March 2003 • PCLU mandate is to manage and direct the investigations and prosecutions relating to the following: • Cases which arise from the TRC: • Any other priority crimes determined by the National Director. • Serious national and international crimes, including treason, sedition, terrorism and sabotage

Role of the Prosecutor • Assists the court: • in arriving at the truth and just verdict • in arriving at a fair sentence based on evidence • Represents community in criminal trialsEnsure that interests of victims and witnesses are promoted • Key obligation is to act in a balanced and honest manner – without fear, favour or prejudice

Aspirant Prosecutor Training • 6 months training programme in NPS • Training on specifics related to prosecution • Course work includes: • Office management • Skills development • Court administration • Intensive practical training on how to conduct prosecutions in court • Annual intake - July
DSO Training • DSO trainees start as probationary investigators • Training programme: • Core skills training – 16 weeks (Boot Camp) • Further training in • basic investigative procedures • understanding of legal and policy requirements • safety skills • Minimum 80% pass required • Training completed – Special Investigator
