  1. Canyon A deep, narrow valley with steep sides; often has a stream flowing through it.

  3. Isthmus A narrow strip of land that connects two larger areas of land.

  4. Cataract A large waterfall or any strong flood or rush of water.

  5. Delta A triangular-shaped plain at the mouth of a river, formed when sediment is deposited by flowing water.

  6. Island An area of land completely surrounded by water.

  7. Pangaea The name of a huge super continent that scientists believe split apart about 200 million years ago, forming different continents.

  8. Butte A small raised area of land with steep sides. Mesa A high, flat-topped landform with cliff-like sides; larger than a butte.

  9. Did you know… Buttes and Mesas are formed when plateaus erode away due to wind, rain, and other environmental affects.

  10. Plateau A large, flat area that rises above the surrounding land; at least one side has a steep slope.

  11. Plains A large area of flat or gently rolling land.

  12. Volcano An opening in the earth’s surface through which molten rock, ashes, and gasses from the Earth’s interior escape.

  13. Mountain An area that rises steeply at least 2,000 feet above sea level; usually wide at the bottom and rising to a narrow peak or ridge.

  16. Peninsula An area of land almost completely surrounded by water and connected to the mainland by an isthmus.
