Building better nutrition education 1. Inventory your own mission, vision and values about nutrition education • What is your nutrition education mission? (mission) • What do you see being the end result…the fruit of your labor? (vision) • How will a graduating senior in my district deal with food? • What are the core principles you use to guide your program/process? (values)
What is Network’s mission? “The mission…is to create innovative partnerships that empower low-income Californians to increase fruit and vegetable consumption, physical activity, and food security with the goal of preventing obesity and other diet-related chronic diseases.”
What is your mission? Think local. “The mission…is to link the cafeteria, classroom, and community to create school environments that reflect a commitment to the health and well-being of Hawthorne students and families so they will be healthy, happy and ready to achieve their full potential.”
Building better nutrition education 2. Talk to your PM and NEC 3. Find out what curriculum is being used in your district. Ask: • How many more years will they be using it? 4. Find out who oversees the adoption/implementation/evaluation • Find the space to talk about nutrition education • Is there an open window to fly through?
Building better nutrition education 5. Get help from teachers • What type of lesson do they prefer? • Grade appropriateness? • Food in the lesson? • How do they want it delivered? • How can you get more teachers on board? 6. Research materials that are already developed and approved
Building better nutrition education 7. Adopt materials • Can a teacher participate? • Weigh your lessons against your mission, vision, and values, then… • Get more feedback • Create new lessons only as a last resort Once the materials are ready…
Building better nutrition education 8. Plan and conduct trainings • Start small 9. Assist with implementation 10. Collect informal feedback • Observe a lesson? 11. Gather feedback and make changes
