About the Council The City of Monash is a local government area in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia in the south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne with an area of 81.0 square kilometres and an estimated population of 176,069 people. The mayor of the City of Monash is Micaela Drieberg. The city of Monash has four different wards, Mount Waverley ward, Glen Waverley ward, Oakleigh ward, and the Mulgrave ward.
Oakleigh Ward • Population: 22,647 51% females 49% males • Area: 12.2 km² • History: Following the Second World War, Melbourne burst its borders and flowed into semi-rural land. The suburbs Moorabbin and Oakleigh expanded to the south-east. The end of the Second World War also saw an Australian government attitudinal change with regards to immigration. • Note: Includes Oakleigh east and south
Mulgrave Ward • Population: 17,647 50.6% females 49.4% males • Area: 11.1 km² • History: Mulgrave Parish, as it was then known, was first settled in 1839 by Thomas Napier, a Scottish Builder who first reached the Colony of Victoria in the mid-1830s. Napier settled on the banks of the Dandenong Creek and built his homestead in Bushy Park Wetlands, and what is now Jells Park.
Mount waverley ward • Population: 32,076 51.4% female 48.6% male • Area: 15.9 km² • History: The Mount Waverley area, then part of the Parish of Mulgrave, was divided by straight roads running north-south and east-west, each exactly one mile apart, by Assistant Surveyor Eugene Bellairs, in 1853.
Glen Waverley ward • Population: 39,204 51.2% female 48.9% male • Area: 16.8 km² • History: The area was first settled in the mid nineteenth century and later developed as orchards and farming lands.
