Amphibia = (L) living a double life • Considered tetrapods– having 4 muscular limbs and feet with toes and fingers (digits) • 3 main orders: • Order Caudata (salamanders, newts, sirens, etc.) • Order Gymnophiona (Caecilians) • Order Anura (frogs and toads)
Order Caudata • salamanders, newts, sirens • Cauda = (L) tail- possess a tail throughout life • Many toxic species (if ingested) • skin colorations to warn predators • Some able to regenerate a lost limb or tail • Feed on small animals, such as insects, worms, and snails. • Most have internal fertilization • males produce spermatophore, females pick up with cloaca and store in spermatheca • Larvae are similar to adults, but smaller
Salamaders • Smooth, slick and moist skin • Round tail • Most adults terrestrial Newts • Dry, warty skin • Most adults return to an aquatic habitat • Flattened tail • More distinctive differences between the sexes Sirens • No hind legs • Lungs and gills • Spend entire life in/near water

Order Gymnophiona • Caecilians • Gymnos- (Gr) naked • Worm-like burrowers- NO legs/feet • Appear segmented because of muscle bundles • Feed on worms and other soil invertebrates • Skin covers eyes; most thought to be blind • Fertilization internal • Young emerge from female as mini adults • Some lay eggs

Order Anura • frogs and toads (4000 species) • Found mostly in moist environment (some have been found in high latitudes and desert) • Adults lack tail • Hindlimbs long and muscular with webbed feet • Fertilization almost always external with aquatic eggs and larvae • Young are herbivores, adults predators • Some toxic
Frogs • two bulging eyes • strong, long, webbed hind feet that are adapted for leaping and swimming • smooth or slimy skin (generally, frogs tend to like moister environments) • Frogs tend to lay eggs in clusters. Toads • bodies and legs shorter/more stubby (for walking instead of hopping) • warty and dry skin (usually preferring dryer climates) • paratoid (or poison) glands behind the eyes • The chest cartilage of toads is different also. • Toads tend to lay eggs in long chains.
