Warm Up Reflect the following image across the line.
Motion in the Coordinate Plane Transformations
Horizontal/Vertical Translations • To translate a figure horizontally on the coordinate plane, add or subtract a number to the x-coordinates leaving the y-coordinates alone. H(x, y) = (x + h, y) • To translate a figure vertically on the coordinate plane, add or subtract a number to the y-coordinates leaving the x-coordinates alone. V(x, y) = (x, y + h)
Reflection Across the x- or y-axis • To reflect a figure across the x-axis, multiply the y-coordinate by -1, leaving the x-coordinate unchanged. M(x, y) = (x, -y) • To reflect a figure across the y-axis, multiply the x-coordinate by -1, leaving the y-coordinate unchanged. N(x, y) = (-x, y)
180˚ Rotation About the Origin • To rotate a figure 180˚ about the origin, multiply the x and y coordinates by -1. R(x, y) = (-x, -y)
