  4. Isolationism • After WWI the U.S. did not want foreign involvement • For example, refused to join the League of Nations at the end of the war

  5. Intolerance • Unwillingness to accept different beliefs • Red Scare: anti-Communist fears • Prohibition enacted with the 18th amendment • Scopes Monkey trial • Against teaching evolution in schools

  6. Nativism • Opposition to immigration • “Natives only!” • Anti-immigration policies • WASP mentality • Rise again of the KKK • Phobia of foreigners

  7. Materialism • Stock market • “speculation”- taking a chance on making huge profits in the future • “buying on margin”- 10% down and borrow the rest from a broker • More purchasing power • People using credit to buy things • “Installment buying”

  8. Materialism • Mass consumerism: “The more stuff, the better!” • Cars, cosmetics, appliance • Henry Ford mass-produced autos (mass production revolutionized the era) • Electricity at home • “Two chickens in every pot”

  9. Escapism • Desire to flee the once traditional norms of society • Flappers • Leisure time and more vacations • Cars! • Moonshine, speakeasies • Movies • Visual advertising • Baseball, boxing

  10. Lawlessness • Widespread acceptance or willingly ignoring the breaking of the law • Prohibition • Bootlegging,gangsters • Al Capone • Speakeasies & rum runners
