  1. Parts of Speech Part 1: Nouns, pronouns, adjectives

  2. Common Noun • Names a person, place, thing or idea • EXAMPLES: • Person: boy, girl • Place: school, house • Thing: book, window • Idea: happiness, love

  3. Proper Nouns • Name a particular person, place, thing, or idea (HINT: look for capital letters!) • EXAMPLES: • Person: Jason Pavis, Mrs. Wilson • Place: NHMS, The White House • Thing: The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle

  4. Nouns cont’d • Tip: In a sentence, nouns usually follow the words: a, an, the

  5. You Try: • Each of you name a common noun and a proper noun.

  6. Compound Nouns • Noun made of two or more words put together • EXAMPLES: • Mrs. Kehoe • cheerleader • homework • light-year • self-esteem

  7. Collective Nouns • Names a group • EXAMPLES: • Team, committee, board, crew, class

  8. Concrete Noun • Names common or proper noun that you can see, taste, touch, smell, or hear • EXAMPLES: • Window, The Giver, NHMS, boy

  9. Abstract Nouns • Names common nouns that are ideas, feelings, or qualities of a person (you can’t see, taste, touch, smell, or hear them!) • EXAMPLES: • Anger, beauty, wisdom, honor, Christianity

  10. Pronouns • Pronouns- used in place of a noun • Example: • Ask Brandon if Brandon has done Brandon’s homework. • Now add pronouns: • Ask Brandon if hehas done hishomework.

  11. Pronouns cont’d • Personal pronouns to remember… • Singular: Plural: • I, me, my, mine we, us, our, ours • you, your, yours you, your, yours • he, him, his, she, her, hers, they, them, their, theirs it, its

  12. Pronouns cont’d • Antecedent- the word or group of words that a pronoun stands for • Ask Brandonif hehas done hishomework. • The antecedent is Brandon • The pronouns are heand his • Walking the dog is fun, and it is good exercise. • What is the antecedent? • What are the pronouns?

  13. Pronouns cont’d • Sometimes the antecedent is NOTstated. • Example: • Who asked that question? • Someone will have to clean up this mess.

You Try…Find the pronouns and antecedents • I will call Emily tomorrow and ask her if she wants to come over. • Pronoun- her, she • Antecedent- Emily • When Max, Andrew, and Dawson sit together, they get along great. • Pronoun- they • Antecedents- Max, Andrew, Dawson • I always go to my aunt’s for Thanksgiving. • Pronouns- I, my • Antecedents- none • “Ishurma, don’t forget your paper,” said Mrs. Jasinski. • Pronoun-your • Antecedent-Ishurma • It must be fun! • Pronoun-it • Antecedent-none

  15. Adjectives • Adjective- describes a noun or pronoun • Usually comes before the noun or pronoun it is describing • Examples: I love your purple sweater and hoop earrings. • Adjective- purple • Noun- sweater • Adjective- hoop • Noun- earrings

  16. Adjectives cont’d • Adjectives can be common (lower case) or proper (capitalized) • Examples: • The Italian flag is red, green, and white. • Adjectives- Italian, red, green, white • Noun- flag • I like to eat Mexican food every now and again. • Adjective- Mexican • Noun- food

  17. Adjectives cont’d • There are 3 articles: • A, an, the • These are one kind of adjective

You Try…Find the adjectives • When you go to the fish pond, Tommy, don’t fall in. • Adjective- fish • Noun-pond • I can’t wait to have Thanksgiving dinner with my whole family. • Adjectives- Thanksgiving, whole • Nouns- dinner, family • I went to the Friday night football game, and then it started to rain. • Adjectives-Friday, football • Nouns-night, game
