  1. Circuits and Symbols

  2. Electricity An open circuit has a break so electricity cannot flow A closed circuit allows electricity to flow The flow of electrons through a circuit

  3. Short Circuits Paper, plastic, or even an air gap can cause electrons to stop flowing. Electricity by-passes a device in the circuit Electricity always follows the path of least resistance Short circuits can drain batteries, melt insulation, and start fires

  4. Circuit Diagrams The diagram on the right is a faster way of drawing the circuit on the left. What direction is the flow? A short-cut method of drawing circuits

  5. Electricity & Water Valve = Switch Pump = Battery Water Wheel = Light Bulb Pipes = Wire Imagining how water would work in a circuit can help you predict how electricity will work

  6. You Try As a group draw a water circuit on your white board that contains a pump, a valve, and a water wheel

  7. You Try Now replace the water components of the previous circuit with the electrical components. Does it work?

  8. Exit Ticket Does the bulb light? Why or why not?
