Early Life • She was born April 7, 1915. • During Billie’s childhood she lived in Baltimore, Maryland. • As a teenager she sang in jazz clubs, which was the beginning to her career. • When she was 18 John Hammond found her and took her to make her first record with a studio group.
Adulthood • Holiday began working with Lester Young in 1936, who gave her the nick name “Lady Day”. • She made several hit records.
Career • Her career was to sing. • She co-wrote many songs that all became hit records.
What is she known for? • She is known for her songs. • She was most known for as the first African-American woman to perform with an all white orchestra. • Some of her famous songs include; “God Bless the Child," "Don't Explain," "Fine and Mellow," and “Lady Sings the Blues."
