Sample Postures (pictures found on YogaJournal.com) • How do we balance? • Our sense of physical balance is an intricate system involving the inner ear, eyes, skin pressure of the part of the body we’re attempting to balance on, muscles, joints, and the central nervous system (brain and spine.) Our balance is effected by our state of mind, the weather, and our emotions. It may be better on one side or the other and regularly fluctuates from day to day. • How does yoga help improve balance? • Yoga works on a physical, emotional, and mental level.By enhancing our ability to focus and calm the mind while strengthening our muscles and joints, yoga can help us to balance with greater ease. • What poses should we avoid when working on balance? • Make sure to have a support nearby – a stable chair, wall, etc. to avoid a fall. • There is a tendency to hold the breath so make sure to continue to breathe when balancing.
