  2. Ancient Origins • Celtics celebrated the new year on November 1 • They believed that the night before (October 31) the spirits of the dead returned to earth • On this night they would have large bonfires and wear costumes

  5. Ancient Origins • People believed that on All Hallows Eve evil spirits came to earth • They began to leave food and lanterns outside of their homes to keep the spirits out • This led to trick or treating and Jack-O-Lanterns traditions today

  6. Halloween Comes to U.S. • Irish immigrants in the late 1800s brought Halloween traditions to the U.S. • During this time U.S. Americans began to practice Halloween traditions

  7. Halloween Today • Children dress in costumes and trick or treat • Some costumes are scary but people dress up as many different things for Halloween

  13. Teens • Teenagers and young adults sometimes have costume parties • It is also common for people this age to get together to watch horror movies on Halloween

  14. Adults • Adults will sometimes have costume parties • Some adults wear costumes to take their children trick or treating or to give out candy
