Communicate Communicate newly developed Energy Management Action Plan • All stakeholders should be aware of the plan and its objectives Review action items from the plan Reach out to those directly affected by these items • How can they affect/ensure success of items? • Who will be responsible for enacting each item?
Raise Awareness Demonstrate importance of plan objectives Consider using specific case-studies from throughout the district to demonstrate costs and/or savings • For example, costs to run gym or stadium lights for one hour
Build Capacity Expand the knowledge and ability of district staff Consider organizing district-level energy training Use resources from the Kentucky Energy in Education Collaborative organizations Encourage independent learning
Types of Training Operational and Procedural Training - Provides instructions and information regarding new operating methods and/or procedures designed to reduce energy use Administrative Training - Includes reporting, monitoring, data collection and other administrative efforts that support energy management Specialized Training - Gives specific instructions on using and maintaining equipment or tools to ensure more efficient operations
Motivate Creates a sense of ownership among stakeholders Ensures “freshness” of the program Fosters continual improvement and consistent results Incentive-based programs can be a win-win
Types of Motivation Internal Competitions - Use tracking tools (e.g. KEEPS Energy Report Card) to compare the performance of individual schools, buildings, facilities or even with a neighboring district Recognition -Highlight and reward accomplishments of individuals, classes, departments or whole facilities Financial -Offer a financial incentive if goals are met or for a top performer Environmental Responsibility - Certain audiences may respond to the environmental and social impacts of the program
Track and Monitor How is the district meeting its energy management goal through objectives defined in the action plan? KEEPS Tracking resources • KEEPS Energy Report Card • KEEPS Energy Checklist • KEEPS Project Matrix Identify measurable components of each action item “If you don’t measure it, you can’t manage it”
KEEPS Energy Report Card Compares the utility consumption of multiple facilities to one another Provides a “snapshot of success” Great for implementing an energy reduction competition program within the district
How the KEEPS Energy Report Card Works Enter usage (or cost) information into input boxes for baseline and current years Copy information over to summary page Sort and rank data
KEEPS Energy Checklist Use this tool to monitor behavioral trends in district buildings Can be used to track change over a period of time Track energy-consuming behaviors in each building and target areas for improvement
KEEPS Energy Checklist (cont.) A snapshot in time of energy usage and energy-consuming behaviors Includes facility-wide, no-cost/low-cost checklist Allows team to evaluate behaviors across several functional areas (classrooms, library, gym, etc.)
