  1. New Physics Phases in CPVThe Case in Present Tense January 19, 2004

  2. NP CPV Phases inPresent Tense • Intro: raison d’etrefor B Factories • (Abelian) Flavor Symmetry and SUSY • Accounting forSfKs, Sh’Ks , SKsp0& |A⊥(fK*)|2 • Situation forBsMixing • SuperB Crisp Measurement: SK*0(Ksp0)g • Conclusion see Kolda’s talk for more on NP CPV George W.S. Hou

  3. Intro: raison d’etrefor B Factories George W.S. Hou

  4. Events leading up to B Factories B Factories Built on CleanMeasure of sin2f1/b • 1979-80 Carter & Sanda, Bigi & Sanda • — Neat Mechanism/Method • 1983 Long tB • 1987 Large DmBd[ARGUS] • 1989 Asymmetric e+e−[Oddone] • 1993-94 “David & Goliath” ... Raison d’etre accomplished 2001 George W.S. Hou

  5. Totsuka sensei’s Charge to Super-KEKB HL5 @ Izu BELLE’s new result on asymmetry in the BfKs ... Considering all these research programs other than the B factory, the funding for the luminosity upgrade of a B-factory is not an easy task for KEK, and for other laboratories, too. All I can say at this point is that Ineed more good results like the recent onein order to impress MEXT (funding agency) about how important the super-B factory program is. One thing I like to hear from you is, though it is a nasty question, what you will do once a consensus is made to globally build the LC; whether you will join the LC or you will still be 100% involved in the super-B factory.... A no-nonsense guy! “David & Goliath” Redux ? ’n I agree w/ him ... Theme LargeNP CPV Phasew/CrispMeasurement George W.S. Hou

  6. SfKsSign Anomaly fK*Polarization Anomaly LargeNP CPV Phasew/CrispMeasurement “Belle” “BaBar” SK*0(Ksp0)g Kagan (SSI 2002) “P Conserving” ... Chua, WSH, Nagashima 03 WSH, Nagashima (to appear) Confession: We’ve been saying for years “ICPV in B fKs is a great place to search for New Physics”. It was lip service. The mindset was “Precision Tests”. So,SfKs < 0, for 2nd year, came as a shocker. George W.S. Hou

  7. SfKsSign Anomaly [Belle/BaBar Average View] sin2f1eff (fKS) = -0.39±0.41 2002 158 fb-1: sin2f1eff (fKS) = -0.15±0.33 2003 250 fb-1: Still 2.7s from 0.73 (~ 2002) Large,NewPhysics,b → s CPVEffect • Large Effective s-b Mixing • NewCPV Phase • Right-handed Interaction [to getsin2f1eff (h’KS) ~ sin2f1] Call for Synergies of Flavor & SUSY? 10. Framework & Theme • (approximate) Abelian Flavor Symmetry ⊕ SUSY AFS Has Right-handeds-bMixing SUSY Brings in Right-handed Dynamics • AFS Model Pre-existed Nir-Seiberg, PLB’93; Leurer-Nir-Seiberg, NPB’94 • More Definite, yet Generic, Model Context ⇨ Constraints ⇨ Predictions Has All Ingredients w/ CPV Phase SK*0(Ksp0)g Raison d’etrefor Super B ? Crisp Measurement! Have Advantage vs Hadronic Machines George W.S. Hou

  15. Assume Right-handed QuarksInert in SM  Right-handedSquarks SUSY also important RR Sector Impact b ⇄s thru SUSY George W.S. Hou

  16. Level Splitting by Large Mixing Drive One State Light strange-beauty squark 1 CP Phase s 100 GeV Possible Focus on 200 GeV George W.S. Hou

  17. TeV Scale SUSY w/Strange-beauty Squark Some Remarks • Fine-tuning to l2 - l3 to get light ? • Finetuning! • Why TeV Scale SUSY? • LargeFlavor Violation (s-b) • ⇔ Stringent Low Energy Constraints • - even w/ d decoupled; • - all other SUSY partners a “nuisance”:), so pushed high • “Light” Particles: ≲ 200 GeV • ≳ (≲?) 500 GeV • likely LSP? l2 ~ Vcb, l3 ~ Vub Not MSSM ...  ⊕ s phase George W.S. Hou

  18. B fKs,h’Ks Rates 1, 0.5 TeV 2, 0.5 1, 0.8 TeV 2, 0.8 b sg(andB fKs) Rate Constraints • Survive b sg Constraint More Conservative • fKs Rate “Sees Red” • Cannot Account for h’Ks Rate • Not a New Problem • Combine b s g and B fKs • → s ~ p/2,3p/2 ? George W.S. Hou

  19. Accounting forSfKs, Sh’Ks , SKsp0and |A⊥(fK*)|2 George W.S. Hou

  20. A Little Note on Formalism … • Besides O1,2Tree • O3-6Strong Penguin • O7-10EM/EW Penguin • alsoO11,12g/g Dipole Matrix Elements evaluated via Naïve Factorization George W.S. Hou

  21. Tuning for SfKs ≲ 0,Sh’Ks~ SyKs Possible • SfKs≲ 0 prefers lower s-plane • ➯ Sh’Ks≅sin2FBd as well ! • Lower gluino masslowers SfKs • Hadronic Parameters • CP phase enters B → fKs via • Lower q2, and/or larger • ➯Larger |SfKs | • ∴Prefer to keep gluino mass • above 500 GeV (L.E. Constraints) • Could s ≲p/2be it? 0.5 TeV Preferred Noticed also by Khalil & Kou ’03 [Murayama et al. ’03] George W.S. Hou

  22. BaBar: CPV with B0 Ksp0 [bs d dbar] asymmetry Reconstruct B  Ksp0 vertex using Ks trajectory and boost trajectory p+ p- boosted U(4s) Ks e+ e- p0 N = C = S = S (C=0) = Dz mES In the absence of New Physics, S= sin(2φ1) =0.731±0.056 Consistent Seems Fine George W.S. Hou Browder @ LP03

  23. Amplitudes hadronic uncertainty V∓ A Reason why Opposite Trend inSfKs vsSh’Ks , SKsp0 R.H. interactions, not quite “P-conserving” George W.S. Hou

  24. fK*: Br and |A⊥(fK*)|2 ~ 0.4 Attainable Kagan/Sinha Talks on VV George W.S. Hou

  25. NP CPV phase s~ 60° - 70° ~ 200 GeV ~ 500 GeV Upshot Two Particle System Collider Direct Search Flavor Factory but need to disentangle hadronic effect w/ Kingman Cheung George W.S. Hou

  26. Situation forBsMixing George W.S. Hou

  27. Consequences: DmBs, sin2FBs Tough (!?) Take s ≲ p/2as example • Lighter gluino ~500 GeV Needed • - DmBs > 70ps-1Tough ! • - sin2FBs ~0 - 1 Tough ? • Would’ve preferred [Arhib, Chua, WSH 01] • heavier gluino but for … SfKs ≲ 0 • For lighter gluino, • periodicity change • ∵ • a-term dominant(two exch.) • 100 GeV ? • ~ 200 GeV case • Except, Easier Direct Detection ! George W.S. Hou

  28. 10 fb-1 (1 yr) Steep ! Experimental Prospects for DmBs Slightly Better Diminished Expectation 5 at 68 ps-1 / yr x George W.S. Hou

  29. Go for UntaggedDGBs CPV Effect? ~ 10%GBs George W.S. Hou

  30. SuperB Crisp Measurement: SK*0(Ksp0)g inspired bySKsp0 George W.S. Hou

  31. BaBar: CPV with B0 Ksp0 [bs d dbar] asymmetry KSVertexing: Unique to B Factory Reconstruct B  Ksp0 vertex using Ks trajectory and boost trajectory p+ p- boosted U(4s) Ks e+ e- p0 Thank Oddone again N = C = S = S (C=0) = Dz mES In the absence of New Physics, S= sin(2φ1) =0.731±0.056 George W.S. Hou Browder @ LP03

  32. Implications: Wrong Helicity Photon inb sgL • Strength of Mixing-dep. CPV • Test gL component • (Atwood, Gronau, Soni, 1997) • SK*0(Ksp0)gnowPromising • In contrast Bsf g • probably rely on DGBs • Can also test gL comp. via • LPolarization in LbLg • (Mannel, Recksiegel, 1997) Crisp Free of hadronic uncertainty George W.S. Hou

  33. LargeNP CPV Phasew/CrispMeasurement • Large effects in SfKs (Sh’Ks , SKsp0) and |A⊥(fK*)|2 • but plagued by hadronic uncertainties ... • LargeNP CPV Phaseimplied by SfKs < 0 • Projects CrispMeasurement of SKsp0g ≠ 0 • No Target to Shoot for ifSfKs < 0Goes Away Let’s Hope for the Better This Year ! George W.S. Hou

  34. Nakao san will show eff. vs Si size Confession II • Liked AGS Mechanism since beginning • Quantum Interference requires two helicities • Alas, Nature is Cunning: K*0 KSp0 • No Track! • Pursued B0 K1(1270)getc. instead ... • So, BaBar’s SKsp0came as a shocker. • ’course, had large(r) Si (than Belle) or so I thought ... Invest in Larger Si ! N.B.SKsp0gdifficult for hadronic George W.S. Hou

  35. as opportunity ? Caveats • Direct CPV in Kp: Pattern Change, • but Improved • D0-mixing: Just at present limit • [because Vus shifted to uc sector • generic for alignment • Cannot escape 199Hg edm (Shimizu talk) • [complicated enough • ... George W.S. Hou

  36. Conclusion • SfKs,Sh’Ks ,SKsp0 Data Calls for - Larges-b Mixing, w/ New CPV Phase - New Right-handed Interaction • A Light Flavor-mixed Squark? Independtly Well Motivated (Flavor & SUSY) • Survive b sg • Can Account forSfKs≲ 0,Sh’Ks ,SKsp0 ~ SyKs • DmBs,sin2FBsMay BecomeDifficult • SKsp0g nowPromising ➯ Push for Super B w/ Large Silicon SuperB may be Superb George W.S.
