  2. Russell Crowe in Gladiator • Russell Crowe in Gladiator the movie was inspired casting. Russell Crowe in Gladiator played the part of MaximusDecimusMeridius and was praised for "Crowe's steely, soulful performance". Russell Crowe was consumed by his role and the movie, which was directed by Ridley Scott, and contributed to the screenplay on many occasions. Russell Crowe received the coveted Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role in the 73rd Academy Awards.

The movie depicts the gladiator Maximus fighting as types of gladiators called Provocateurs would have fought. Provocatores were recognisable by their armor and weapons and were the only types of gladiator to have effective protection for the upper body in the form of a rectangular breastplate. The most famous quote from the movie is by Russell Crowe as Maximus when he confronts Commodus, "My name is MaximusDecimusMeridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next."
