Birth Order Birth order plays an important role popular belief about intelligence and character. For example, oldest children were believed to be the smartest, or youngest or the middle one – depending on popular culture, to be the rebel. However, birth order effects on intelligence are more apparent than real (see Rodgers et al. (2000), and they do certainly not stem from born as a firstborn, but from being educated as a firstborn (Kristensen & Bjerkedal, 2007). Other studies show that birth order has virtually no influence on intelligence, achievement, personality, or mental health (Ernst & Angst, 1983). Contributor © POSbase 2008
