Some Things Are Just Simple to Understand • Go… make disciples… baptizing them… Matt. 28:19-20 • He who believes and is baptized will be saved… Mk. 16:16 • Repent and be baptized… for the forgiveness of sins. Acts 2:38
As simple as the charges and statements are to understand about baptism there are aspects about baptism that some Christians still need to learn.
Colossians 2:11-12 11 In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Himthrough faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.
The Shadow of Circumcision • Circumcision – cutting away the foreskin (flesh). Gen. 17:9-14 • Colossians 2:11-12 • Circumcision made without hands. • “…Putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, buried with Him in baptism…” v. 11 (see NIV: “the putting off of the sinful nature”)
The Link Between Circumcision and Baptism • Both circumcision and baptism are tied to the initial covenantal relationship with God.Vs. 11-12 • Both conjure up a picture of the removal of the flesh physically (with circumcision) and spiritually (with baptism). V. 11
The Link Between Baptism and Christ’s Death • The identification is three-fold. Col. 2:12 • Death. • Burial. • Resurrection. • This link is also made in Romans 6:3-11
The Link Between Faith and the Working of God • God raised up Christ. Matt. 28:5-6; Acts 2:24 • By/through faith we believe God’s work of salvation has resurrected us from death to life… in Christ! Col. 2:11-12
No Boasting, Except in God Ephesians 2:8-9: 8For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.
