Why I chose to Research Down syndrome… • I chose to research Down Syndrome because one of my very close friends has down syndrome, and I’ve always wondered why she has it, how I could communicate with her better, and how to see things the way she does.
What is Down Syndrome? • In most cases, Down syndrome occurs when there is an extra copy of chromosome 21. This form of Down Syndrome is called Trisomy 21. The extra chromosome causes problems with the way the body and brain develop.
Characteristics of Adolescents with Down Syndrome Small Ears. Small Mouth. Flattened nose . Single crease in the palm of the hand. Upward slanting eyes. Wide, short hands with short fingers. White spots on the colored part of the eye. Excess skin at the nape of neck
Who is at risk of Down Syndrome? • The chance of having a baby with Down syndrome increases as a woman gets older—from about 1 in 1,250 for a woman who gets pregnant at age 25, to about 1 in 100 for a woman who gets pregnant at age 40. But, most babies with Down syndrome are born to women under age 35 because more younger women have babies.
How to determine if the infant has Down Syndrome… • A woman having a baby with down syndrome if she has already had a baby with down syndrome, or if there is abnormalities in the parents 21st chromosome creates a higher risk of the child having down syndrome. • The doctors can determine weather the baby has it or not by doing a blood test once the baby is born.
Is there a Cure for Down Syndrome? There is no “cure” for Down Syndrome, since down syndrome is a problem with the chromosomes. But however there is treatment for the condition focuses on controlling symptoms and any medical conditions that result of Down Syndrome. Treatment for Down syndrome can include: - Regular checkups and screening - Medications - Surgery - Counseling and support.
