What is Rigor? What is Rigorous Curriculum? • Rigor – “reaching for higher level quality through both effort and outcome” • Rigorous Curriculum: • An inclusive set of intentionally aligned components – clear learning outcomes with matching assessments, engaging learning experiences, and instructional strategies – organized into sequenced units of study. • Serves as both the detailed road map and the high-quality delivery system for ensuring that all students achieve the desired end: the attainment of their designated grade- or course-specific standards within a particular content area. The Big Picture
A Process, Not an Event • Multi-year Process • Built within big picture of process • Done in incremental steps over time The Big Picture
Big Picture Process • Take a look at the cards on your table • The bookends: • State Standards • State Assessments • Where do the others fit in the process? • Decide as a table on an order The Big Picture
State Assessments; National Assessments Common Formative Post-Assessment & PLT Process Enrichment, Remediation, Intervention Prior to Next Curricular Unit Effective Teaching Strategies with Progress Monitoring Checks Rigorous Curricular Units of Study based on Unwrapped Priority CCSS The Big Picture Common Formative Pre-Assessment & PLT Process Scope, Sequencing, and Pacing Curricular Units Priority CCSS and Supporting CCSS Common Core State Standards
What Pieces do we already have in place? The Big Picture
Unit Planning Organizer • Working document • Template for teachers • Include Support Information • Embed Items if possible instead of hyperlink. • Many items online may not be always available at the url. Save if possible. Unit Planning
Unwrapping a standard • What a students should know(concepts) and be able to do (skills) • Example: • 8.G.7. Apply the Pythagorean Theorem to determine unknown side lengths in right triangles in real-world and mathematical problems in two and three dimensions. Unwrapping • Concepts: • Pythagorean Theorem • Right triangles • Skills: • Apply • Determine
Blooms / Depth of Knowledge • At what level are students expected to think? • Use your Cognitive Rigor Matrix to identify both levels • Example: • 8.G.7. Apply the Pythagorean Theorem to determine unknown side lengths in right triangles in real-world and mathematical problems in two and three dimensions. Unwrapping • Concepts: • Pythagorean Theorem • Right triangles • Skills: • Apply • Determine • Blooms/DOK • 3/1 • 3/2
Vocabulary • List vocabulary that apply to the concepts and skills • Some vocabulary may not be directly in the standard itself Unwrapping
Your Turn • Select one unit to begin this process. • Fill in Explanation and Examples from other state documents • Use this to list concepts, skills, and vocabulary to align with selected standards • Identify the appropriate Blooms and DOK level for each skill Unit Planning
