James Chadwick Born in October 20,1891- July 24, 1974 By Alexandra Cardona, Caroline Garretson and Hannah Dela Cruz
About James Chadwick • Born in Cheshire England • 1908 graduated Manchester University • 1913 was a prisoner of war for 4 years during WWI in Germany • 1919 researched in Cambridge University’s nuclear physics lab • He married Aileen Stewart Brown from Liverpool in 1925. • James had two twin daughters. • Live at Denbigh, North Wales • Chadwick hobbies include fishing and gardening
Experiment • Using a sample of Beryllium bombarded with alpha particles caused it to emit mysterious radiation in using magnetic field, which bounced off wax and were sent to a detecting chamber in which he later discovered the radiations were neutral. • He discovered the charges were neutral when radiation that was released hit wax and was sent into a detecting chamber. This detected the neutral charges that were given off.
What Did He Discover?Neutrons • In 1932 Chadwick discovered neutrons • A neutron is the neutral charged particles in an atom found in the nucleus. • Mass nearly 1,840 times of an electron. • Neutron consist of 3 quarks like other protons - A quark is a particle which is only found in other particles • Neutrons are important in forming a chain reaction in nuclear fission, as used in nuclear reactors and atom bombs.
