General Guidelines • For Medical School Graduates (M.D. or D.O.) in non-ACGME accredited clinical training. • Must possess a valid CA medical license or Section 2111 approval. • Appointed for 1 year, with a possibility of extension for 1 additional year. • Can be Non-Salaried or up to 150% Resident Physician 6 scale. For example, the 7/1/08 RP 6 scale is $54,900, therefore the fellow may receive a salary between $0 - $82,350. • Health insurance is mandatory. May be self-insured or via OGME.
Sr. Clinical Fellow Prefixes • Visiting: all Section 2111 fellows. • Visiting Provisional: all fellows with a pending 2111 approval. Limited to 6 months only and may only participate in research. Upon 2111 approval, dept must submit a request to remove ‘provisional’ from title.
Examples of Prefix Use • Dr. Abe has a valid CA medical license = Sr. Clinical Fellow • Dr. Brown has a Section 2111 approval = Visiting Sr. Clinical Fellow • Dr. Dill’s Section 2111 application is pending = Provisional Visiting Sr. Clinical Fellow
Procedures for Appointment • Obtain fellowship approval from OGME. • Submit candidates proposal letter and CV to SOM Academic Affairs (follow proposal template on SOMAA website) one month prior to proposed start date. • For non-citizens, obtain Appropriate VISA (via OGME if primarily clinical or via International Center if primarily research fellowship) according to their deadlines. • For foreign medical school graduates, submit 2111 application to SOM Academic Affairs three months prior to proposed start date.
After Appointment approval and prior to fellow beginning work • Department returns the original signed offer to SOM Academic Affairs. • Fellow attends an orientation in OGME. • Fellow obtains an ID Badge from campus security. • 2111 Fellows also attend an orientation in SOM Academic Affairs.
How do they get paid? • If paid on a research grant (sub 0), fellows salary is paid via payroll. Enter into PPS with DOS code REG. All Sr. Clinical fellows are PPS title code 2732, regardless of prefix. • If paid on a training grant or fellowship (sub 3), their stipends are processed through Disbursements. Enter a NonSalaried appt in PPS. Complete the Fellowship Stipend Agreement form and return to Josie Barber. If fellow is not a US citizen or Permanent Resident, alert Josie in advance.
Procedures for Reappointment • Submit Sr. Clinical Fellow reappointment request to SOM Academic Affairs via memo. Memo needs to include: • Fellow’s progress • Department expectations • Salary • Any changes in license or visa status • Signature line for fellow, Dept Chair and Assoc. Dean *** For Section 2111 fellows, end date of reappointment cannot exceed end date of 2111 approval.
Procedures for Separation • Notify all offices involved with appointment • SOM Academic Affairs • OGME • International Center (if applicable) • Medical Board – via SOMAA (if applicable) • Disbursements (if applicable)
