  1. Final Design Review forThe SNS BLM SystemR. Witkover, D. Gassner Part I: Overview

  2. BLM System Requirements • Protect SNS from radiation damage through MPS • Minimize activation (1 W/m criterion) • Provide radiation data to tune beam loss • Will not be used for personnel safety SNS BLM FDR

  3. System Requirements SNS BLM FDR

  4. BLM System I/O • Detailed Time History….Each BLM at 10 Hz rate • Total Loss………………Each BLM at 10 Hz rate • Fast Loss MPS Output….10 μsec rise, 10 μsec delay • Low level loss output……Each BLM at 0.1 Hz rate • Gain Set/ Readback……..60 Hz rate • Bias Voltage Control……As Required SNS BLM FDR

  5. Estimated Losses – Low end • 1 W/m Requirement • 1 W/m produces 100 mR/hr activation • Rule of thumb: Beam-on loss=1000 x activation = 100 R/hr 1 hr = 216000 pulses  0.46 mR/pulse or 0.46 R/sec for 1 msec pulse Ion chamber with 70 nA/R/sec response = 32.4 nA At 1% resolution signal = 324 pA SNS BLM FDR

  6. Estimated Losses – High End • Requirement: 1% local loss • 1% of 2 MW = 20 kW = 2x104 x 1 W/m 2 x 104 x 0.46 mR/pulse = 9.2 R/pulse For 70 nC/rad Ion Chamber  644 nC For a 695 ns RTBT pulse this is 0.93 A! In the Linac and HEBT, a uniform loss of 1% is reasonable at 0.644 mA SNS BLM FDR

  7. Detectors • Wide distribution BLM System • Ion Chambers • Stability • Uniformity • Linearity over suitable range • Fast BLM System • Liquid Scintillator – Photo-multipliers SNS BLM FDR
