12/12/13 25 Bird Beak Lab HW: None Warm-Up: Create the following chart:
Materials: Bird Food: Beaks: Cooked pasta Chopsticks Beans Spoon Popcorn (popped) Clothespin Rice Toothpick Other Materials: Timer, graph paper, large container for feeding station, and small container for stomach
Procedure • Select one type of beak. You will use this beak throughout the lab. • Place the stomach container (cup) next to you on the right and place your left hand behind your back. • When given the signal, begin to gather food on the tray using your beak (utensil). • Gather food for 30 seconds. Remember all food must go into the stomach container and it can only be gathered using the beak.
Procedure continued • Record the number of pieces of food gathered for each type of beak. • Wait for the teacher to switch out the food source. • Repeat steps 3-6 with other types of food. ***Note: If you touch the food with your hand, then you must empty the contents of your stomach back into the feeding tray.
After completion of the lab… Create a bar graph of your data with “food type” on the x-axis and “pieces eaten” on the y-axis. Be sure to color each bar a different color and create a key. Pieces Eaten Type of Beak
Answer the following questions on page 25 BE SURE TO WRITE THE QUESTION! • Which beak is best adapted for each type of food? • Which beak would survive in an environment with only cooked pasta? Beans? Popcorn (popped)? Rice? • What would happen to bird populations if there suddenly was a shortage of cooked pasta and an abundance of rice? • Apply your results to at least 2 factors of natural selection.
EXTRA CREDIT (5 Points) Recreate your bar graph using Microsoft Excel. Print off your graph at home and bring to school next class periodfor 5 points extra credit. Be sure to include labels on the x- and y-axis. NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED!!!
