Problem? How did the finches on the Galapagos Islands all end up with different shaped beaks?
Hypothesis FINISH THIS STATEMENT (in your journal) If the finches on each island all have different beak shapes, then they got that way because… Skip a few lines to add more information in a minute!
Different beak types: Tooth pick Chop stick Spoon Tweezer Bird “stomach” Cup Environment with different available food Paper Plate Lab recording materials Notebook Timer Pencil Materials
Procedure • In your group of 4, select your beak type. • Place paper plate in center of table. Wait for “food”. • One at a time, each bird “eats” as much as it can in 30 seconds. (This is NOT a competition for resources!!) You may “eat” only one piece at a time. • Place each item you eat into your cup. • After 30 secs, count how much each bird eats. • Record numbers in data table. • Repeat for trials 2-4.
Hypothesis…Add these to your other answers… What do you think will happen in each trial? Which beak will be successful? Use what you know about natural selection and “survival of the fittest” to make your prediction.
