  2. Welcome This program is supported by the Title III grant “Information Literacy” (#1201-09) Participants • Librarians • Teaching Faculty

  3. We ask ourselves, “Why aren’t my students able to…?” • Find academically appropriate information • Recognize not all answers can be found in Google • Produce high quality research papers • Understand what constitutes Plagiarism

  4. One way to address this… Teaching and Reinforcing Information Literacy Skills

  5. What is Information Literacy? Information Literacy is the ability to know when information is needed, and to find,evaluate, and use the appropriate information ethically.

  6. Are you thinking…? “Gee, I’d like my students to be able to do that”

  7. What can we do? • Collaborate to develop assignments which support and reinforce information literacy • Provide librarian taught instruction classes in information literacy skills • Help students integrate information literacy skills into their present coursework  • Encourage students to apply these skills into the rest of their college experience

  8. What are the results? Students armed with information literacy skills have the tools needed to succeed while they are here and in life after college.

  9. Expectations of Faculty • Attend Facilitated Workshop • Collaborate with liaison librarian • Return to participate in follow-up workshop

  10. Expectations of Faculty • Modify proposed course to include: • An assignment that requires students to find, evaluate, and effectively use information • Information literacy objectives • Student learning outcomes • Assessment of student performance

  11. Expectations of Faculty • Teach the modified course. • Submit a copy of the final, updated syllabus and accompanying assignment(s) for archiving on IL webpage. • Report on results. Write an evaluation of student outcomes following implementation. • Have students participate in SAILS testing

  12. Project SAILS Standardized Assessment of Information Literacy Skills

  13. About the SAILS Test • Available on the Web • Students answer 45 multiple choice questions • Most students finish in 35 minutes • Tests cohorts of students, not individuals

  14. Liaison Librarians will: • Help to identify appropriate information literacy objectives • Recommend sources that fit the course goals • Provide instruction targeted to the specific assignment • Work individually to assist students with their research

Timeline Overview For Spring Classes • August 8th 2009 • Information Literacy for Teaching and Learning workshop • Fall 2009 • Faculty/librarian pairs meet to discuss Information literacy objectives and library assignment/research component. • Edit, Modify and Update proposed syllabus, in concert with workshop partner. • Submit modified syllabus. • 1st Stipend payment • Submit final syllabus, assignment, and schedule library instruction • 2nd Stipend payment

  16. Timeline Overview For Spring Classes • Spring Semester 2010 • Implement curricular changes • Teach updated course • Library support of research activity • Assess student work • Students take SAILS test • Summer 2010 • Submit assessment • Meet for wrap up workshop

Compressed Timeline For Fall 2009 Classes • Fall 2009 (August 8th -13th) • August 8thInformation Literacy for Teaching and Learning workshop • Faculty/librarian pairs work on Information literacy objectives and library research. • Edit, Modify and Update proposed syllabus, in concert with workshop partner. • Submit syllabus for use in Fall Class • Schedule library instruction • Stipend payments Aug. and Sept.
