  2. What do children & parents want? • Young ‘carers’ state they want appropriate information • Want to be listened to • Know who to contact in a crisis • Help & a friendly face • Not feel blamed • Parents want support but not to feel threatened

Barnardo’s: 10 Key Messages from Young People • Introduce yourself • Tell us who you are and what job you do • Tell us what is wrong with our parent • Tell us what is going to happen next • Talk to us & listen to us • Ask us what we know & what we think • Tell us it is not our fault • Please don’t ignore us • Keep on talking to us & keeping us informed • Tell us if there is anyone we can talk to

What going to change things? • Recognition nationally that we need to treat whole families – not just the person presenting to a service (i.e child or adult) • Recognition of the role of Carers in mental health - ? Young carers • Social Inclusion agenda – ‘Supporting Families’ • SCIE systematic review

  6. Social Inclusion Report (2004) • First cross government report published • Highlighted stigma and discrimination experienced by those with mental health problems (e.g. Education, employment, support for families) • People experiencing mental health problems should have the same right to a healthy, quality life as others • Highlighted young carers as a socially excluded group, with consequent impacts in achievement, attainment & increased risk of MH problems

  7. SCIE / NICE review • Systematic review funded by DH through SI programme • Literature reviews • Practice sites / consultancy • Focus groups • Issuing of guidance for AMHS and CAMHS and LA’s • Monitored by the Healthcare Commission

  8. What now? • Lots of examples of good practice – Learning from Australia • Resources to help – e.g. Heide Lloyd’s booklets, Barnardo’s 10 key messages • Implementation of family work in adult services • Noticing children – everyone’s responsibility – changing practice re: assessment (Crossing Bridges information) • Partners in Care – ‘Being Seen & Heard’
