India starts to band together • Indian national Congress (Hindus) • Muslim League (Muslims) • Want independence, fight on British side during WWI • If protest, thrown in jail
Turning point: Amritsar Massacre • In 1919, fired into a group of protesters • 400 killed, 1200 wounded • Indians come together and want independence after this event
Mohandas Gandhi • Civil disobedience • Led non-violent protests • Boycott British goods, refuse to attend 2nd class schools. Refuse to pay unfair salt taxes • Led a “Salt March” where they made their own salt by evaporating sea water
British guards beat peaceful demonstrators • People around the world called for India’s independence • Demonstrations hurt British economy and the world pressure wore the British down
