PURPOSE The purpose of this presentation is to share information about some of the ways Queen Kaahumanu School is addressing the needs of its English Language Learners. (Please note that this is just a brief overview of some of the program’s components.) QKS ELL Program
INTRODUCTION • Queen Kaahumanu School • Grades K-5 • 615 students (as of 9/11/13)) • 345 identified ELL (as of 9/11/13) • 199 (J/K status: direct servicing) • 95 (M/L status: monitoring) • 51 (I/N status: initial exit/prev. ELL) QKS ELL Program
Our ELL Program • VISION…Students who have English as their second language will be able to function in the mainstream school population and become productive members of society. • MISSION…To provide instruction to these students based on their needs and strengths so they will demonstrate positive achievement. Our ELL Program • GOAL…To provide each student who is identified as an ELL student appropriate services based upon district/state/federal guidelines. • OBJECTIVE…To develop the student’s communicative competence in the English language to a level which will allow him/her to function on a peer group level academically, socially, and culturally. ASSESSMENT • WIDA ACCESS TEST • SOCIAL & INSTRUCTIONAL LANGUAGE • LANGUAGE OF MATH • LANGUAGE OF SCIENCE • LANGUAGE OF SOCIAL STUDIES • Initial Placement • Annual reassessment • Native Language Proficiency (NLP) Test • Used in all schools in Hawaii QKS ELL Program
PROGRAMMING • ELL Program Instructional Services • Average time = one period per day. • Additional Support: • For the upper grade Non-English proficient (NEP) students, an additional period may be given if needed. • Newcomer Program (New Student Support Center) QKS ELL Program
COMPLIANCE • 100% compliance in servicing ELLs with ELL Program supplementary instructional services due to: • awareness of the needs and challenges of our ELLs and commitment to help them by the entire school staff • schoolwide scheduling agreements • support of our ELL Program by the teachers and administration QKS ELL Program

BE AWARE • Learn about the students’ backgrounds (cultural and language) • Assess the students’ needs and strengths QKS ELL Program
BE INFORMED • Know about the different philosophies of language/culture learning. • Know about the research-based methods to improve skills in the language domains of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, along with higher-order thinking skills and academic content knowledge. • Know the English Language Proficiency (ELP) and grade level content standards. QKS ELL Program
BE RESPONSIVE • Differentiate instruction to address needs and strengths through the use of: Various instructional groupings Strategies/techniques for teaching English language learners Adapted content, process, and product • Allow the students time, to first acquire the new language (English), then learn the required academic content. QKS ELL Program
CURRICULUM • Students who have English as a second language will be provided standards-based language lessons focusing on the communication skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing, and understanding, incorporating a variety of techniques/strategies used in language and basic skills instruction. QKS ELL Program
