Weber and the Protestant work ethic LO: Develop an understanding of Weber’s theory on the role of religion.
Max Weber • German sociologist • Published The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism in 1904 • Religion existed because people needed a system of basic beliefs to make sense of existence, identity and derive meaning.
Calvinism • Form of Protestantism • Founded by John Calvin during the reformation. • Assisted the emergence of modern capitalism in Northern Europe. • Spirit of capitalism – based on systematic, efficient and rational pursuit of profit. • Connection on Calvinist beliefs
Calvinist Beliefs • Predestination – God selects who will be saved (prior to birth). There is nothing that can be done to change this fate. • Divine Transcendence – No human knows the will of God except that revealed in the Bible. Weber suggested that this left them with an “inner loneliness” since they did not know if they were to be saved and there was nothing they could do to earn their salvation.
Calvinist Beliefs • Asceticism – Abstinence, self-discipline and self-denial. • Vocation – Constant, methodical work in an occupation, not a monastery. (This worldly) • Shunned luxury, worked hard and practiced self-discipline. • Helped their salvation panic – wealth equaled God’s favour. • Money grew – the wealth that they obtained was reinvested in obtaining more wealth – MODERN CAPITALISM.
Hinduism and Confucianism • India and China were materially more advanced but failed to produce capitalist culture. • This is due to the lack of religious belief that would push it. • Hinduism is ascetic – Other Worldly • Confucianism – This worldly but not ascetic
Criticism Which came first the chicken or the egg? • There is evidence to suggest that capitalism started before the Protestant Reformation – Karl Kautsky • Therefore Calvinism was not the cause but rather a religious justification – R.H. Tawney • Did not understand all the religions like he claimed – Jews were seen to be far more capitalist in nature. • Why was wealth selected as an indication of God’s favour? How come money was not shared with the poor? Would that not seem more religious?
