  4. What is a SIG? PMI Specific Interest Group One of three types of PMI communities (colleges, chapters & SIGs) Currently -- 29 SIGs Opportunity for PMI “members with common interests and industries to come together and share ideas, challenges and concerns across geographical boundaries”

Trying to develop a standardized approach of diagnosis, therapy and of healing – can we be successful at all? The PMBOK Guide defines the term Project as: “A project is a temporary endeavor to create a unique product or service.” Project Management is defined: “Project management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to project activities to meet project requirements.” If a project is a unique entity in itself can there be a standardized approach valid for most or maybe even all troubles?The question is whether we will be able to develop a repository—a structured collection—of methods and solutions, which can be applied by, project managers to solve troubles or be used by consultants and trainers to support project managers.Want to learn more?   10. My Personal SIG Experience • Show personal experience from membership in 2 representative SIGs • Provide information useful to MBC members in deciding to join SIGs

SIG membership – Personal Experience • Joined the A&D & Consulting SIGs for additional $35 in June 2006 at PMI membership renewal. • Expected to be useful in starting up my PM consulting business • Hoped networking would prove beneficial and lead to consulting work through the A&D SIG • Hoped to increase consulting skills through the CSIG

North American Conference, 2006 • Attended the annual membership meetings for each SIG held in conjunction with the North American Congress held in Seattle in October 2006. • Provided: • Increased awareness of the SIGs’ roles and activities • Opportunity to express my needs and expectations to SIG leadership • Great networking opportunity!

My A&D SIG Participation • Volunteered to work on team updating the DoD Extension to the PMBOK (later put on hold) • Attended two A&D SIG webinars on “Performance Based Logistics” (2 PDUs) • In process of attending ten CSIG/A&DSIG/ METSIG webinars on “PMO and the Portfolio: Measuring Towards Value” (10 PDUs)

Networking Opportunities • ID SIGs of interest & join • Research back newletters, articles, libraries, webinars, etc for subjects of interest • Correspond with authors if you have questions, want clarification or have other issues you would like their views on • Use the resources to engage others in your sphere of influence • Use SIG discussion group to engage others • See if Local Interest Groups (LIGs) exist and participate • If not, form one if sufficient interest exists

Information Technology and Telecommunications SIG Offers - the provision of monthly continuing education presentations (Webinars)- Professional Development Award Programs ( TSI Award Program , UMT Scholarship Program , Project of the Year Program, Mentoring Program )- publishing of professional development articles in SIG Newsletter- publishing of professional development articles on SIG web site- SIG endorsement of sessions at all PMI Global Congresses- reviewing of presentations for all PMI Congresses- active involvement in ProjectWorld Toronto and many others. 32

  34. My Experiences with PMI SIGs In addition to the numerous SIGs available through PMI, the Minnesota PMI Chapter had several SIGs that met at different times each month. Some SIGs met before the dinner meeting, as well as once a month other times. 34

I was active in the IT SIG and became its coordinator. • Then I started the eBusiness/e- Commerce Chapter SIG. • Our largest SIG was the New Product Development SIG. • There are many good reasons for attending a chapter meeting. In the Minnesota chapter, the SIG programs were the highlight of the evening for many. 35

  36. When I joined the Minnesota PMI Chapter in the ,I immediately became involved with chapter-sponsored LIGs/SIGs. 36
