  1. A Reader’s Perspective David Sevier, Ed.D. Scott Eddins, Ed.D. State Board of Education

  2. What a reader dreams… He dreams of picking up and reading a proposal that is so innovative and full of new and exciting ideas that he just can’t wait to get the project underway. This will be the proposal to end all proposals; the proposal by which all other proposals will be measured for years to come.

  3. What a reader often gets… • Last year’s approved proposal, absent any evidence of long-term benefits, with the expectation of continued funding • A previously approved proposal with an upgrade to the technology • A proposal that benefits the writers more than the recipients

  4. Evolution of “The Ask”

  5. Here’s what makes us nuts… • Too much equipment that stays at the IHE • “In name only” partnerships (last year’s letter with the date changed) • Weak (or absent, or bogus) recruiting plan • Partnerships based on convenience rather than need

  6. Believe it or not, these things matter • Spelling • Arithmetic • Grammar • Pagination • Following the directions

  7. We think you’re great, but… • We really don’t need to read a 6 page CV • We are less concerned with your past than your future • If your institution hired you, that’s good enough for us

  8. What worked before… • Many teachers don’t know that they don’t know • Top quintile teachers most often engage in extra PD • Find ways to bring in the agnostics

  9. Finally… • We think you are among the best people in the state to help our P-12 students and teachers move the needle • We need you more than you need us • If we knew what to do we would already be doing it
