What is Geology? • Geology- is the study of the Earth. • Geologist- are scientist who study the processes that create Earth’s features and clues about Earth’s history
Forces That Change The Earth • Constructive Forces- build up mountains and landmasses. • Destructive Forces- slowly wear away mountains and eventually every other feature on the surface.
The Crust’s of the Earth • The crust- the layer of rock that forms the outer skin of the earth. • The crust has dry land and the ocean floor.
2 types of Crust: The crust that forms the continents is called the continental crust which is made up of granite (rock). Granite is less dense than basalt.
Continued: Basalt is more dense (sinks) than Granite. The crust beneath the ocean is called Oceanic crust which is made up of basalt.
Mantle: Lithosphere and Asthenosphere • Lithosphere- Litho means stone (rigid) which is partly rock. The lithosphere is less dense, floats. • Asthenosphere- Astheno means weak. It is also said to be plastic like or molten. The Asthenosphere is more dense than the Lithosphere.
The Outer Core • Outer Core- a layer of molten iron and nickel in the center of the Earth. • Which are metals, good conductors of heat and are magnetic
The Inner Core • The Inner Core-a dense sphere of solid iron and nickel in the center of Earth but can also become liquid because of extreme pressure, the atoms can not spread out. • Also, good conductors of heat, and magnetic.
Super cool fact: Currents in the liquid outer core force the solid inner core to spin at a slightly faster rate than the earth. This creates Earth’s magnetic field
