Math Department Grading Policy 2011-2012
The Math Department has adopted a standards-based assessment and grading policy to better ensure our students’ academic success.
What This Means for the Student Until the final end-of-year grade, the student’s report card will merely reflect where they stand in terms of concept mastery at a given moment in time. The semester grade will no longer be an average of the quarter grades.
What This Means for the Student The only factors that contribute to a grade are the student’s evidence of mastery of the standards.
What This Means for the Student Students will have multiple opportunities to meet and exceed the standards.
E – Exceeds the standard (4) The student demonstrates a thorough understanding of the concepts The student completes a thorough analysis of the problem with accurate solutions
M – Meets the standard (3) The student demonstrates a good understanding of the concepts The student completes an analysis of the problem with considerable accuracy
P – Progressing (2) The student demonstrates a partial understanding of the concepts The student analyzes the problem with some success Accuracy needs to improve
NTY – Not there yet (1) The student demonstrates little or nounderstanding of the concepts The student shows little or no evidence of analysis Accuracy is weak
When it becomes necessary to equate a student’s mastery • level with a numeric grade, the following assignments will • be made:
Assessments are scored based on the E, M, P, NTY scale. Each of the standards are assigned a grade based on the student’s level of mastery. Before entry into the gradebook, the E,M P, NTY scale is converted to its corresponding 4, 3, 2, 1.
What it looks like in the gradebook… Assessment grades are broken down by standard providing both students and teachers a clear picture of the mastery level.
