Harakat ul-Ansar • Formed in October 1993. • Formed when two political activist groups--Harakat ul-Jihad al-Islami and Harakat ul-Mujahedin—merged. Lauren Dorris
Size and Strength • Several thousand armed supporters located in Azad Kashmir, Pakistan, and in the southern Kashmir and the Doda regions of India. • It’s estimated that Harkat commands at least 500 well-trained militants. • Composed of mostly Pakistanis and Kashmiris, but includes Afghans and Arab veterans of the Afghan war. • Uses light and heavy machineguns, assault rifles, mortars, explosives, and rockets. Base of Operations • Based in Muzaffarabad, Pakistan, but members conduct terrorist activities primarily in Kashmir. • Trains its militants in Afghanistan, Pakistan and parts of Kashmir. Lauren Dorris
Operations and Accomplishments Against the West • Harkat has sent a large number of Muslim militants in Kashmir to fight security forces in Indian-controlled areas. • Harakat-ul-Ansar is claimed to be fighting in Kashmir, the Philippines, Bosnia, Tajikistan, and the Middle East. • Linked to the Kashmiri militant group Al-Faran that kidnapped five Western tourists in Kashmir in July 1995; one killed in August 1995, and the other four reportedly killed in December of the same year. Affiliations • Harkat leadership is reportedly working with Osama Bin Laden. • The HUA and a few other militant groups were using Bin Laden's Afghanistan camps to provide military training to their members. • Collects donations from sympathizers in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf and Islamic states and from Pakistanis and Kashmiris. • Source and amount of HUA's military funding are unknown. Level of Threat to U.S. and Western Civilizations • The US Government designated Harkat as a terrorist group in 1997. • Pakistan has not cracked down on the group's militant activities in Kashmir fearing a backlash from Islamic fundamentalist groups. Lauren Dorris
Abu Sayyaf-bearer of the sword • Is a militant organization that is based in southern Philippines • Their organization was formed in the early 1990’s • Abu Sayyaf wanted a separate Islamic state for the countries that are Muslim minority • The White House refers to Abu Sayyaf organization as an terrorist organization • Abu Sayyaf split from the Moro National Liberation Front because they were then trying to come to terms with the central government in Manila. • Their first major attack was in 1991, when an Abu Sayyaf grenade killed two American evangelist Lindsay Powell
Abu Sayyuf ( Continued) • Abdurajak Janjalani was the first leader • From 1998 to 2006 the group was led by Khadaffy Janjalani • Janjalani took over the leadership position when his older brother Abdurajak was killed. • Abu Sayyaf suffered major losses of leadership in 2006 and 2007. • Abu Sayyaf has engaged in bombings, assassinations, kidnappings, and extortion • In February 2004, the group planted a bomb in a passenger ferry docked off the coast of Manila, killing more than one hundred people. LT (Lashkar-e-Tayyiba) • Established in the early 1990’s. • The actual number of members is unknown but they have several thousand. • Their base of operation and where they’re active is India and Kashmir. • Operating against the Indian troops and civil targets in Kashmir. • They accomplish spread of Ideology. • Ideology- set of aims and ideas especially in politics.
