Monarchy • A political system in which a state is ruled by a monarch (king/queen).
secular • Not controlled by a religious body or concerned with religious or spiritual matters.
allegiance • A person’s loyalty to a group/cause/ruler/state/country/ etc.
Fief • A piece of land granted by a feudal lord
serf • An agricultural worker in feudal Europe; bought & sold with the land they cultivated.
obligation • Something that you have to do; a duty.
Coat of arms • A design on a shield that represents a family (or university or city).
Three field system • A system of crop rotation that was used in feudal times; two fields are planted while a third lays fallow.
Tithe • A tenth of your income; paid to the church/clergy.
Gothic architecture • Architecture that is characterized by point arches, flying buttresses, & high curved ceilings.
The crusades • A religious war by European Christians to retake the Holy Land from Muslim forces. (11th-13th cent.)
