Geography • Colder, wetter climate than the Mediterranean • Many easily navigable rivers • Advantages? Disadvantages? • Rolling hills, dense forests, and large mountains (Alps and Pyrenees)
Geography People migrated across Europe in search of wealth, farm land, and access to trade
The Fall of Rome • After the was empire divided, power shifted to the East • Trade declined and Rome was unable to afford a large army. This left Rome vulnerable to attack • 410 C.E./A.D. – Rome is conquered by barbarians • The time between the collapse of the Western Roman Empire and the Renaissance is often called “The Dark Ages”
Barbarian Invasions • Barbarians—any people who lived outside the borders of the Roman Empire or people who did not speak Latin • Invasions by Angles, Saxons, Magyars, and Vikings disrupted the social, economic, and political order of Europe
The Vikings • Vikings moved from Scandinavia to • Russia (The Rus) • Iceland • Greenland • North America
Viking Raids • Viking warriors pillaged coastal villages and wealthy monasteries • These raids ended after the Vikings converted to Christianity
Magyars • The Magyars moved from Central Asia to Eastern Europe • Settled in what is modern-day Hungary • Controlled more land than Medieval France
Angles and Saxons • The Angles and Saxons moved from mainland Europe to England • England = “land of the Angles” • Anglo-Saxon Britain
